Event Update - COVID-19

13th March 2020

Max Adventure Race Series

Saturday, 21st March 2020
Wild Horse Mountain, QLD

To all teams,

We know that you all want to be racing as normal next weekend and so do we! However, we need to be mindful of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia. We are continuously monitoring the situation as it unfolds and will keep participants updated at regular intervals.

The good news is that at this point in time the Wild Horse Mountain event next weekend will be going ahead as planned. If the advice from public health agencies and government authorities’ recommendations changes in the coming days this could change but we are all systems go at this point in time. In saying that we want to reassure you that the health and well-being of our participants, volunteers and staff is our primary concern.

For our event to continue we will be introducing a series of pragmatic and practical actions designed to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 to our participants, volunteers and staff.

First and foremost among these are;

Self-care and Risk Minimization
Participants who are sick or have been potentially exposed to an infectious agent must not compete or attend events, as this puts others at risk. As a community, we each have a personal responsibility to protect each other by complying with this rule.

We ask that all participants, volunteers and partners follow the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for basic protective measures against COVID-19:

  • Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.
  • Regularly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash your hands with soap and water, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Practice good respiratory hygiene. Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of used tissues immediately and appropriately in a bin.

Also we will be introducing the following measures to prevent crowding at the event;

Social Distancing at the event

  • Teams will be emailed their race number in the lead up to the event. Teams will then collect their race bag from a marked area, removing the need to line up at registration.
  • Teams will also be sent a dedicated start time, limiting the number of teams forming at the Start line at any one time. The first teams will begin at the previously published start times, i.e. 8am for Classic teams and 9am for Novice teams then at regular intervals after those times, i.e. 8am, 8.02am, 8.04am, etc. All teams will be out on course within half an hour of the original start time.
  • Team safety briefing information and Novice team ‘Navigation Tips’ will be available digitally only.
  • No formal event presentation will take place at the conclusion of the event.
  • Handshaking will be discouraged for the duration of the event.

Hygiene First

  • Staff and volunteers who are interacting with participants on race day will be provided gloves.
  • No-touch waste disposal stations.
  • When possible, food and drink supplies will be single use/single serving closed packaging, for example water will be provided in single use bottles rather than a communal drink station.

Medical Service

  • Education and awareness training regarding signs and symptoms of COVID-19 will be provided to all medical and volunteer staff.
  • Frequent communication with health authorities and healthcare facilities will be implemented to assist in assessment, referral and initial management of suspected COVID-19 illness of staff, participants, volunteers, and spectators.

This is a highly dynamic situation and we will continue to adapt and adjust as appropriate. We appreciate your patience in the coming days.

Thank you for your continued support.
